According to the Dictionary for the Electrician, a "service" is conductors and equipment for delivering energy from the electricity supply system to the wiring system of the premises served. So, an electrical service upgrade is when you replace the existing conductors and equipment to allow more amperage (power) to flow into the premises served.

How do I know if my service is in need of an upgrade?
First, if you have a 60-amp service (usually indicated by screw-in fuses instead of breakers), you need to upgrade. In today's homes, 60 amps are not adequate to power all the electrical gadgets we have, nor are 100 amps with more than 20 circuits or wires feeding into the panel. This is not always the case, but a very good rule of thumb. If you're not sure, contact Donco Electric to receive a free in-house estimate and opinion.

What is the procedure for upgrading my service?
Depending on which city and power companies' jurisdiction you live in, the procedures can vary. However, the following is a good rule of thumb.

First, call Donco Electric for an estimate from one of our qualified estimators at no charge. This allows you to receive the best value. We then pull all applicable permits to ensure the upgrade is performed legally and contact the planning department of the local utility provider.
Next, we perform the upgrade that includes a new electrical panel and meter can. The city will come to your home to inspect the upgrade, and the local utility will receive city clearance to upgrade the power into the premises. The end result is a complete service upgrade.
